Pictures and words–the essential elements of
commercial art. Just think about this! Practically everything
we use has been touched by the hand of a graphic designer or
photographer. Menus, cola bottles and cans, music CD’s, DVD’s,
T-shirts, pens, pencils, brochures, posters, all emblazoned with
graphic images. In order to create these images you will need to
visualize your ideas. To visualize them you’ll need certain skills.
Drawing, problem-solving, and idea development, along with
typography, digital imagery, layout, computer graphics and
illustration are all essential skills in commercial art. The
Commercial Art program at JCTC is the place to learn these skills
and more.
Jefferson Community & Technical College offers the
only Associate Degree in Visual Communications in the entire
Kentucky community and technical college system. The Communicating
Arts Technology program (CATP) at JCTC is a two-tiered, open admission
Associate in Applied Science Degree program. Commercial Art students
are guided by instructors who are professionals working in the
design and photography fields. Classes have been structured to
simulate the realities of typical business situations.
To complete the program, students must prepare and
present a professional portfolio for judging by a portfolio review
board comprised of designers and photographers from the local
business community. Students who display a competent, professional
portfolio are placed with a local design firm, ad agency or
photography studio for practical experience.
