How To Prepare For A Career Fair
- Resumé: Have someone proof your resumé and make multiple copies to take with you.
- Research Companies: Find out what companies will be present at the career fair. Research those companies that you are interested in so that you can ask important questions and make intelligent comments. Companies don't want to have to explain their company to everyone who visit their table.
- Game Plan: Decide ahead of time which companies you will focus your time on. You will not be able to devote your time to all companies at the fair. Selecting 3-5 companies will help you spend your time wisely.
- Sales Pitch: Prepare a two or three line script about yourself. You have limited time so you want to be clear and concise when you first introduce yourself to a recruiter -- this is your time to impress them!
How To Make the Most Of A Career Fair
- Next Step: After giving the recruiter your resume, ask him/her what the next step will be. Most recruiters will be able to give you some sense of what the next step is.
- Business Cards: Ask recruiters for their business cards. Use the reverse side to write down follow-up information.
- Pen and Paper: Take pen and paper with you so that you can write down important details about a particular position or organization. After visiting a recruiter's table, take a few moments to shot down notes to jog your memory later.
- Self-confidence: This is your opportunity to practice your interview skills. Use this time to practice talking about what you have done, what you know, and what your interests are.
- Dress Professionally: Wear business attire. See tips under interviewing
What Not To Do At A Career Fair
- Cruising the Booths: Don't cruise the booths with your friends. Interact with employers on your own and try to make a positive impression.
- Leave the Bags At Home: Don't carry your backpack, large purse, or other large objects with you. Stick with a professional looking portfolio or small brief case. Usually you can check your coat or backpack in a coatroom.
- The 11th Hour: Do not wait until the last half hour of the event to attend. Many employers have traveled a long distance are may need to leave early.
