How To Prepare A Resume

1. Before You Begin Writing A Resumé

  • Outline your work experience
    (ie, position title, employment dates, job title, etc)
  • Outline co-curricular activities and any leadership positions held
  • List volunteer experiences
  • List relevant coursework

2. Content Of Your Resumé

  • Name, address, telephone, e-mail address, and website address
    • Avoid using nicknames
    • You can list both your temporary and permanent contact information
      -- label each clearly and indicate the dates that you should be reached
      at each (ie. Permanent Address: After May 21, 2002 )
    • Include your area code with your phone number.
      NOTE: Record a professional greeting on your answering machine
    • List a professional sounding email address.
    • Include a website address only if it reflects your personal career goals
      (ie resume on line, school project, professional homepage, etc)
  • Objective Statement (optional)
    • Tailor your objective to each employer you target.
    • Be specific about the job you want. Also, if you are interested in obtaining an internship, indicate this in your objective statement. For example, To obtain an internship within a financial institution requiring strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Education
    • List your most recent educational information first
      (ie if you transferred to U of L from JCTC, list U of L first and JCTC second)
    • Indicate your degree, major, minor/concentration
    • List your grade point average if it is a 3.0 or higher
  • Work Experience
    • Use action words to describe your job duties (see below). Use present tense action words when describing skills in a current position and past tense action words when describing experiences you are do longer doing.
    • List experiences in reverse chronological order (most recent job first)
    • List (1) Title of position (2) Name of organization (3) Location of work
      (4) Dates of employment (5) Description of work responsibilities
      -- be specific when describing skills. For example, don't just you supervised employees. List the number of employees you supervised.

3. After You Write Your Resumé

    • Run a spell check.
    • Ask friends and relatives to proofread your resume.
    • Ask a career counselor for feedback.
    • Photocopy on white or off-white paper--
      colored paper is hard to read when faxed or copied.
    • Use 8 1/2 X 11-inch paper
    • Print on one side of the paper
    • Use a font size between 10-14 points
    • Use non-decorative font styles
