Pat Day mural graces Jefferson Educational Building
|
Few Louisvillians forget the day celebrated jockey Pat Day earned his first Kentucky Derby win aboard Lil E. Tee in 1992. One of the day’s most enduring images -- Day with arms raised in victory and thanks – is now part of the city tapestry. At five-stories high, a digitally printed mural of Day now graces the eastern wall of the Jefferson Educational Center at Second Street and Broadway. The 50x28-foot vinyl mural was created by Greater Louisville Pride Foundation, which is placing murals of “Hometown Heroes” throughout the city. These public art projects honor famous area people including Muhammad Ali, Ed Hamilton, Pee Wee Reese and Bob Edwards. Although the Pat Day mural went up March 27, it will be officially unveiled on Monday, April 5 at an 11 a.m. ceremony across the street in the Holiday Inn parking lot. The mural will serve as a backdrop for the ceremony, which will include Day, officials from Churchill Downs, and Jefferson Community and Technical College Foundation, which owns the Jefferson Educational Center Building.
