At Jefferson Community and Technical College, we realize that different students learn in multiple ways, and different schedules play a big part too. That’s why we offer several formats of online classes: Learn by Term, Learn on Demand, and FlexTerm. All three award KCTCS credit, just like you’d receive for an in-the-classroom course, but each operates slightly differently.
“Learn by Term” refers to the most common type of online class—those that adhere to a regular semester calendar—either Fall, Spring, or Summer. You’ll have a predetermined start date and a predetermined end date, and you’ll be completing the class alongside other classmates (virtually, at least). You can enroll in a Learn by Term course the same way you would for an in-person course, through your home KCTCS college. While these courses are completed online, some require proctored exams and lab activities that may take place at an approved location convenient for the student. A revolution in online education, Learn on Demand offers both parent courses and bite-size classes, called modules, which are about 3-5 weeks long. Learn on Demand parent course offerings are 15 weeks long and include all modules required in a parent course. You can start on a schedule you choose. Modules build toward complete parent courses for accredited, affordable degrees, certificates, and diplomas. While these courses are primarily offered online, some require proctored exams and lab activities that may take place at an approved location convenient for the student. Start any day, move at your own pace. FlexTerm is a convenient and flexible option for attending college and pursuing a degree. These JCTC courses are 100% online (though some may require 1-2 proctored exams), and are self-paced, allowing you 120 days from the date you enroll to complete all course work. Because FlexTerm courses operate on a virtual term, you’re able to enroll any day of the year, meaning you won’t need to wait until the next semester begins to pursue your educational goals. Please note: at this time, students receiving financial aid should not enroll in a FlexTerm course. However, if this does not affect you, you’re welcome to begin whenever you’d like.
