Maria B. Miller Speech Award

  • Maria B. Miller, Emeritus, was the first faculty member of the Communication Department at Jefferson Community and Technical College when it opened its doors on the Downtown campus in 1968. 
  • The Maria B. Miller Speech Award was established in her honor in 1994 after her retirement in the Fall of 1993.
  • Each spring the Department of Communication holds a contest to determine what graduating student will be awarded the Maria B. Miller Speech Award.
  • All graduating students from all Jefferson Community & Technical College campuses are invited to participate in the speech contest.
  • The winning student is the Student Graduation Speaker and is presented a plaque and a check in the amount of $50.

Requirements:

  • Student must be a graduating sophomore.
  • The speech must be 3 minutes long.
  • The speech is addressed to the President, Provost, guest speaker, graduates, faculty, family, and guests.

Content:

  • Content should be about the present achievements of the graduating class and how the institution has helped the student and other graduates accomplish goals.
