Mission Statement

The Mission of the Department of Communication is to teach in the communication discipline, as well as serve Jefferson Community & Technical College and the surrounding area.

Faculty in the Department of Communication demonstrate proficiency in scholarship. The department adheres to SACS guidelines which require that all instructors have a Master of Arts with at least 18 hours in the discipline.  Course work emphasizes the rhetorical, interpersonal, and mediated contexts and perspectives that define the field.   These are advanced through the faculty's commitment to the scholarships of teaching, application, integration, and articulation of communication courses offered within the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.

Communication courses:

  • Provide students with core knowledge of the field of communication in the courses taught.
  • Provide students with increased communication awareness of and experience in oral, written, non-verbal, and listening skills in both group and one to one settings.
  • Provide students with opportunities to develop competencies needed for specific personal and career goals.

Students are expected to demonstrate responsibility and communication competence throughout their course work. Competencies are assessed through individual course requirements, including examinations, papers, performances, presentations, experiential components, and research projects.
