Assessment Centers

Students take the three-part COMPASS assessment to help academic advisors determine skill levels in reading, writing and mathematics.

The COMPASS is used to place students into appropriate courses and not to determine whether a student is admitted to the college. The COMPASS is taken after a student is admitted to the college.

Students may take the COMPASS free one time at a JCTC campus prior to enrolling in classes. The COMPASS or portion of the assessment can be taken again for a small fee.

While the COMPASS is not a timed assessment, most people need 90 minutes to two hours to complete all three parts.  It is important to take the COMPASS seriously. Only test-takers and staff are allowed in the assessment office during testing hours.  If children are brought to the campus, they must be supervised by a responsible adult outside the center.  Our staff cannot accept this responsibility.  Practice assessments are available. See links below.
