Volumetric Medical Imaging

Volumetric medical imaging (VMI) is the next generation of medical imaging. The data obtained from computerized tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) traditionally consists of a 2D “slice” through the body. With advancing technology, the number of slices obtained per patient has increased to the point that physicians have an overwhelming amount of information to review.

To manage the amount of data, software has been developed to combine the set of 2D slices into one comprehensive 3D volume that accurately represents the internal anatomy. As medical imaging technology becomes more available, it plays an increasingly powerful role in diagnosing and treating pathology as well as pre-surgical planning.

STUDENT ADMISSION

  • Candidates for this challenging program possess a general understanding of human anatomy as well as sound capabilities in computer applications.
  • JCTC is offering the VMI program in Fall 2010 in which selected students can obtain a VMI certificate.
  • Candidates have completed their A.A.S. in Radiology Technology or CAD and are motivated to learn advanced anatomy and pathology.
  • Both the A.A.S. and certificate in VMI will be offered in Fall 2010.
