First Time Students (Freshmen)

I've applied. What's next?

  • You must apply as EARLY as possible in order for your aid application to be processed on time.
  • You should try to have your financial aid file completed 8 weeks before the semester begins.
  • The process for all financial aid (grants, loans, and scholarships) begins when you complete the “Free Application for Federal Student Aid".
  • You will need the school code:  006961.
  • If you have already completed a financial aid application for the current year, you will need to add JCTC’s school code to it.

  • New students are required* to take our free placement test in English, Reading, and Math.
    • *Students who have taken the ACT/SAT may be exempt from placement testing at JCTC if they meet certain score requirements.
    • The Assessment Coordinator will be able to determine that for you.
  • Your scores on the placement test will help your advisor know which classes you need.
  • It is important to take the COMPASS exam seriously to ensure proper class placement.
  • It is best to take the placement test on the campus you plan to attend.
  • To schedule an appointment, go to Register for Placement Test.
    • There is no charge for this test.
  • For information about the placement test and practice questions, visit the Assessment Center’s homepage.

ATTEND SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration):

  • All first-time college students must attend one SOAR session AFTER taking the placement test.
  • Your SOAR session will be scheduled by the Assessment Coordinator immediately following the placement test.
    • If your ACT/SAT scores exempt you from the placement test, you may visit the orientation homepage for information about scheduling a session.
  • It is best to attend a SOAR session on the campus you plan to attend.
  • At SOAR, you will participate in a new student orientation, meet with an advisor, and register for classes.
  • You must have a photo ID with you to attend SOAR.
  • If you have taken the ACT/SAT, bring your scores with you.
  • Remember, you must take the placement test PRIOR to attending SOAR.

  • Pay by cash, credit card, payment plan, or financial aid.
  • Pay in person or online by the deadline to avoid late charges or other penalties.
  • You can view payment information including deadlines on the Bursar’s Office homepage.

KCTCS E-mail access:

  • A student gets email access 24-48 hours (2 business days; weekends and holidays are excluded) AFTER enrolling in a regular college credit class.
  • Before that they have access to student self-service (aka PeopleSoft or PS).
